The survey of more than 2,900 workers completex in June found 88 percent said they were interested in pursuinfg jobs in thepublic sector. Brokem down, 41 percent said they were interestedx in jobs with the federal government, while 48 percent said they would be interestedr in jobs in state or locak government. More than one-third (34 of job seekers surveyed said that the economic stimuluxs plan made them more interested in positionswithin government. "In an uncertain market, job securithy is a huge selling pointfor workers," said Chuc Loeher, vice president of government solutions at in a news release.
"Sixty-ones percent of job seekers we surveyed said they thinko government jobs are more stable than private sector a desirable asset in atoughh economy." Respondents said governmenf organizations can make job offers more attractivse by: clearly carving out career pathsd (11 percent), offering flexible schedulexs (10 percent) and conveying a sensde of ownership in one's positionh (10 percent). But, there are some deterrents to working in thepublic sector. When askesd what could deter them from applying for publicsectot positions, workers pointed to office politics or red tape (37 and the fear that they'll be replacecd when a new administration is instated (13 percent).
Respondentsz also had concerns aboutthe government’sw ability to pay as much as the privat e sector (12 percent), while a small number (5 percent) worried abouy their ability to move up in theire career.
