Out of 349 housint authorities in Texas that received money from the Americabn Recovery andReinvestment Act, San Antonil Housing Authority, or SAHA, receiveds the largest amount. SAHA is required to use the moneyt for capital improvements and all the funds must be spen t withinthree years. “These funds will allows us to make much-needed repairs to our public housing propertiez and improve the safety and qualituy of life for our SAHA President and CEO Lourde s CastroRamirez says.
Amon g the properties slated for majodr upgrades is the LewisChathaj Apartments, a 119-unit apartment complex for seniors on the city’x South Side. Lewis Chatham also will undergp anextensive modernization. In addition, stimulus funds will be used to upgradrethe security, elevators and fire safety at nearlhy 20 elderly communities. Other projects will involve replacing fencing, windows, roofing, and heating, ventilation and air conditioninf systems.
